Pamela Dodd's Print Included in Traveling Exhibition

Pamela Dodd's print "Memory's Witness" is included in the traveling exhibition, Global Matrix III: an International Print Exhibition. The Purdue University Galleries presents the show at the Stewart Center Gallery and Robert L. Ringel Gallery from January 9th through February 19, 2012. A contemporary review of fine art printmaking from around the world organized as a traveling exhibition in the U.S. from 2012 to 2014. Previous installments of Global Matrix were presented in 2002 and 2007. The exhibition features artwork from 31 countries around the world. The Stewart Center Gallery and Robert L. Ringel Gallery are free and open to the public.

Stuart Pearl to have a solo show at Butler Institute

Ohio's Butler Institute of American Art has invited Stuart Pearl to have a solo photography exhibition this winter in their Youngstown museum. Ten representative works will be displayed on the second floor of the Beecher Center which adjoins the museum. Admission is free and the work will be on display from January 15 until March 4, 2012.

While visiting the museum be sure to view their permanent collection that features masterworks by Norman Rockwell, Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent and many other icons of American art.

Kokoon Arts Club featured at Cleveland Public Library

Founded in 1911, the Kokoon Arts Club was a cadre of Cleveland artists emulating the then-controversial European movements of Expressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism. Though defunct for over 60 years, its romance — along with the ideal of rebirth and renewal — has provided continuous inspiration to area artists. Now a joint exhibition of Kokooners' works, hosted by the Cleveland Public Library and Cleveland Artists Foundation, celebrates this Modern Renaissance. The show not only exhibits some of the most striking pieces by prominent figures like William Sommer and Joseph Jicha, but also provides historic context. A guided walking tour through the exhibit takes place this Saturday, October 15th, at 11AM. Exhibit continues through December 31st.

The Chagrin Documentary Film Festival This Week

The second-annual Chagrin Documentary Film Festival runs through Sunday at various locations throughout Chagrin Falls with almost a hundred movies from two dozen countries. Festival director Mary Ann Ponce and a selection committee made up of more than 30 local filmmakers and movie lovers weeded through tons of submissions. Several homegrown films made the cut, and more than a third of the films are making their world premieres.

We all played it in some form or another when we were kids. Conventional, make-believe, real, surreal. In the exhibition Playing House, four artists, Stephanie Rond, Stephanie Lipscomb, Sharon Dorsey, and Linda Ayala recall what it meant to “play house”.

“It is with mixed emotions to announce that Wall Eye Gallery will be closing in October of this year. After much deliberation we have decided to end our two year run. The seven partners have either had a life change, new job, new opportunities involving more responsibilities, or the desire to focus on artistic careers. It has been difficult to balance these changes while continuing to organize Wall Eye’s shows.

Although Wall Eye Gallery will no longer be a brick and mortar space, we will have an online presence to share news of other shows in Cleveland, competitions, news about the art world and interviews with artists. But maybe you’ll see us pop-up from time to time.”

The Deep Blues Festival was started in 2007 outside of Minneapolis by Chris Johnson, a fan of dirty blues based and influenced music of all kinds. He based its name on a term coined by the late, great musicologist Robert Palmer, who used the phrase “Deep Blues” to describe the gritty, artful sound of music rooted in the Mississippi Delta and hill country — both electric and acoustic blues that bridges the traditional and the modern. We are putting a second stage in the ballroom so it will non-stop music all night.

Wall Eye Gallery presents Pedaling Art, a celebration of bicycle culture through art and design, May 20 through June 4. The juried exhibition includes visual art in a variety of media, as well as wearable art and crafts, all of which are made from recycled bike parts or have a bike focus. Cleveland Bicycle Week is May 16-22, 2011 culminating in Bike-to-Work Day and the Pedaling Art opening reception on Friday, May 20.

The Ohio City Bicycle Co-op (OCBC) will provide free, secure bicycle valet parking for those who opt to ride. A portion of Pedaling Art sales will be donated to the OCBC to help support their mission to promote cycling in Greater Cleveland. The opening night will also feature stationary bike racing presented by Great Lakes Gold Sprints. In a break from Wall Eye tradition, Pedaling Art will be open for two consecutive weekends with bicycle films showing on the afternoons of Saturday, May 21, Sunday, May 22, and Saturday, May 28.
