Experience the inspirational music of iconic American composers in this benefit concert at Severance Hall. The program will include Carl Topilow's swinging clarinet on Glenn Miller standards, Vinson Cole singing selections from Copland's Old American Songs and Chad Hoopes performing Barber's beautiful violin concerto.

Rust Belt Monster Collective/NOIS @CIA 2.11, 7PM

CIM's Jason Vieaux Wins a GRAMMY

Jason Vieaux, head of the Guitar Department at the Cleveland Institute of Music won a GRAMMY Award Sunday for his album PLAY on the Azica label. The album was produced by CIM alumnus and Director of Recording Arts and Services Alan Bise and was engineered by CIM faculty member Bruce Egre. Congrats to all!

Collecting Art of the Cleveland School 2.7, 1–3PM

Join the The Artists Archives of the Western Reserve in their gallery during the Pearls of Cleveland exhibition—featuring second generation Cleveland School artist, Moses Pearl—to learn about collecting the art of the Cleveland School. This gallery talk is the first of a series of ongoing talks about how, who and what to look for when purchasing the art of the region.

This Collecting Art gallery talk will be presented by Diane Schaffstein from The Bonfoey Gallery and local art historian, Marianne Berardi, Ph.D. Berardi will focus on Moses Pearl as a watercolorist and compare and contrast his work to other notable Cleveland School artists such as William Sommer, Henry Keller, Kae Dorn Kass, Mary Lou Ferbert and Paul Travis. She will also discuss and answer questions regarding what to look for while in the market for this type of art.

MIX: Soul at the CMA 2.6, 5–9PM

Groove to the funky rhythms of soul music as we celebrate Cleveland’s contribution to this infectious music. Dance the night away to DJ Mazi Jahi’s special brand of commercial and B-label soul. This Cleveland DJ legend, record collector and co-founder of Touch Supper Club, was dubbed the “soul archaeologist of Cleveland” by American Splendor comic series author and music critic, Harvey Pekar. Mazi Jahi will spin tracks from the classic soul era of the 1960’s and 70’s for one incredible MIX at CMA.

Further amplify the evening by translating soul’s funky beats into your own works of art, and be inspired by tours of African-American art in the collection.

MIX at CMA is for adults 18 and over.

Drink and Draw Social Club 1st Wednesdays 2.4

Lest you were unawares be it known that the Official Drink and Draw Social Club of Cleveland now meets twice a month; 1st Wednesdays are at The Great Lakes Brewing Company's 2nd floor Rockefeller room and 3rd Thursdays remain the 2nd floor of The Lava Lounge in Tremont. From 7–11PM bring a sketchbook, have a drink, have some food and socialize!

For more than 70 years, the Women's Committee of the Cleveland Institute of Music, an all volunteer organization, has proudly supported the talented young musicians of the Cleveland Institute of Music. They are one of CIM's greatest sources of support—providing time, talent and treasure. Their Musical Luncheon Series is typically presented three times a year, each hosted at a different venue around town and featuring talented CIM students and faculty.

Brews + Prose at Market Garden Brewery 2.3, 7PM

This Tuesday night, February 2, at 7PM,  Brews + Prose at Market Garden Brewery present Philip Metres and Anne Valente. 

Philip Metres is the author of Sand Opera (2015), A Concordance of Leaves (2013), abu ghraib arias (2011), and To See the Earth (2008), among others. A two-time recipient of the NEA and the Arab American Book Award, he is professor of English at John Carroll University.

Anne Valente is the author of the short story collection, By Light We Knew Our Names, and the fiction chapbook, An Elegy for Mathematics. Her stories appear in One Story, Ninth Letter, The Normal School and Hayden's Ferry Review, among others, and her essays appear in The Believer and The Washington Post.
