Every April Brews + Prose celebrate National Poetry Month by welcoming two native Clevelanders whose poems have won them national attention and acclaim. Join us 7PM on Tuesday, April 5, when we welcome the first Poet Laureate of the State of Ohio, Amit Majmudar, and Cleveland School of the Arts junior De'John Hardges, one of five teens selected for the 2015 National Student Poets Program.

As always, those of you who would like to eat before the event should make reservations or arrive early--we'll be setting up shop in the Ohio City Room at Market Garden Brewery. Keep in mind that Amit's books will be for sale at the event courtesy of Mac's Backs. Meanwhile, we continue to offer what we think is the best literary deal in town: buy a book and get a free beer.

From the Ground Up: Surface and Dimension 4.1

The Morgan Conservatory kicks off its 2016 gallery season with their fourth annual juried exhibition! From the Ground Up: Surface and Dimension features 60 works on paper from local artists. The opening reception will take place on Friday, April 1st from 6:30–8:30PM and the work will remain on view through May 7th.

Explore the blockbuster exhibition, "Pharaoh: King of Ancient Egypt," and uncover the stories behind ancient Egypt’s legendary rulers through stunning objects from the vast Egyptian holdings of the British Museum. CAN Journal Drawn & Quartered article is out

The Drawn & Quartered article for CAN Journal written by Northern Ohio Illustrators Society member Karen Sandstrom is out. Hilary D. Gent, Deb Steytler, Jack Flotte, Ron Hill and I are mentioned and photos of Milan Kecman, Ashley Ribblett and Clare Kolat are featured. The event is Saturday, April 23rd and The Murray Hill Life Drawing Group are the defending champs!!

Nature’s Bin “Cash Mob”, Fri 3.18–Mon 3.21

Nature’s Bin has served the Lakewood community for four decades as a source of fresh, healthy, organic foods, long before that became trendy. It’s also served the disabilities community with a mission to give people with both physical and mental disabilities training and skills marketable job skills.

But recently the area has been flooded with stores with similar offerings, often in fancier settings, and Nature’s Bin, despite its local base, its history and its mission, has faced stiff competition.

Because of that, patron Dana Aritonovich has organized a “Cash Mob” for this weekend, through Monday, an informal shopping event organized online in which participants agree to spend at least $20 at a specific establishment. More than 800 people have already committed on her Facebook event page to show up in the next four days. The store is open Monday through Saturday @ 9AM–9PM and Sunday 9AM–7PM. At 4PM Friday, the staff will thank Aritonovich and recognize some special guests. Tell the cashier you are there for the Cash Mob event and you’ll get a coupon good for 10% off your next visit.

“I support local businesses like Nature’s Bin because they are a great example of what a company can do for its community and employees,” says Aritonovich.

AAWR Lecture: Copyright Law 3.19, 1–3PM

Artists are increasingly finding themselves navigating through the complex issue of copyrights. The internet has become a useful tool for artists to market themselves and share information with the world. As images become more easily accessible, artists must have a clear understanding of their own intellectual property rights as well as when it is legally permissible to use the images made by others freely.

Michael Vary practices Intellectual Property Law with McCarthy Lebit Crystal & Liffman, was a partner at Jones Day, and has lectured and taught intellectual property law as an adjunct professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Law. He will give you a better understanding of Intellectual Property laws as he discusses copyrights and trademarks and will field any questions.

Bedford Plein Air Art Fest and Classic Car Show 7.16

On July 16 the City of Bedford is sponsoring a special event, the Plein Air Art Festival and Classic Car Show—sponsored by the City of Bedford and Ohio Plein Air Society, the Rotary Club of Bedford and Old Time Auto—to be held on the Commons from 11AM to 7PM. 

You are invited to join with the artists from the Ohio Plein Air Society to gather on the Commons to paint (as you know, Plein Air means painting outdoors.) Their subject matter will be the historic buildings, monuments, gardens, or depot on the Commons. Some may even choose to go the Viaduct Park and paint the water falls. All of this will take place between 11AM to 3PM  From 3PM to 7PM there will be a live band, food vendors, beer and wine tasting, classic cars on display and the judging of the art. First, second, and third prizes ($300, $200, $100) will be awarded to the artist with the most outstanding work. In addition, there will be a “wet paint” sale. Artists will have an opportunity to sell the work they just painted or previous work that they have.

Artists will bring their own easels, paint and canvas and umbrella if needed. Each can choose their own “painting spot”. There is no registration fee in order to participate. This should be a lot of fun. People love to watch an artist at work. You do not need to be a member of the Plein Air Society. Respond to Joyce Daunch at joyarts36@gmail.com.

'Reinvention' at Artists Archives 3.10

Please join the Artists Archives of the Western Reserve for the opening of 'Reinvention' this Thursday from 5:30 – 8PM. This unique show features artists who had to reinvent themselves due to complications from an injury or aging. 

The Artists Archives of the Western Reserve is located in the Davis Sculpture Center at 1834 East 123rd Street Cleveland, OH 44106, adjacent to the Euclid Avenue entrance of Lakeview Cemetery. We hope to see you at the show.
