The Lit announces winners of the 2008 RTA “Moving Minds”
Poetry Contest

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA), in cooperation with The Lit and the Cleveland chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), recently sponsored the third round of its well-received “Moving Minds: The Verse and Vision Project.” “Moving Minds” pairs the work of local poets with the work of graphic artists based in the region to produce placards that are displayed on RTA buses and trains. My friend, Kerri Whitehouse, is one of the local poets whose poems were chosen. Congrats Kerri! The designer did a nice job with it.

If you don't know Tiny Alice's music, it's a mixture of mostly original rock, jazz, blues and country. ZeroLandfill.net. is a beneficial reuse program held in NE Ohio that supports local artists and arts educators while reducing pressure on local landfill capacity.

Since 2005, the ZeroLandfill project team has assisted the architectural and interior design community in identifying, diverting from local landfills, and repurposing back into the community nearly 50,000 pounds of specification waste that holds value for other audiences.

TRUE A.R.T. Benefit for Raw Umber Saturday 5.10

This Saturday 5.10 at 7PM, the True A.R.T. (Artists Recovery Team) group sponsors a benefit for the Akron Art Movement group Raw Umber, who lost close to $5,000 worth of their current work when it was stolen from a North Collinwood gallery. The Benefit's small suggested donation includes a raffle ticket for a stained glass work. Ohio Independent Film Festival, Thurs. 5.8, 8PM

My friend, Nina McCollum, and her husband Brian have their film "Kingsbury Run," screening at the Ohio Independent Film Festival taking place at Cleveland Public Theater. Their showing is the feature on "Ohio" night, Thursday, May 8th, and starts at 8PM. Robert Banks has a short film right before it. I plan to check it out.

Here's some background info from Nina: 'For those of you who don't know, my husband is an independent filmmaker and together we co-produced our most recent film, "Kingsbury Run," which he also wrote and directed. In addition to co-producing, I have a small acting role in the film.'

"Kingsbury Run," is a pseudo-documentary/horror hybrid that centers around the 'torso murders' that confounded 'untouchable' Elliot Ness during his post-Capone Cleveland career.

Slavic Soul Party! Announces Cleveland Show 5.3

The Brooklyn, NY-based brass band Slavic Soul Party! (SSP!) has just announced a special one-night-only appearance in Cleveland. Persepolis: Marjane Satrapi coming to Case 4.4

Marjane Satrapi, the writer/illustrator of the graphic novel Persepolis will be speaking at Amasa Stone Chapel (on Euclid Ave. across from Severance Hall) on the CWRU campus on Friday April 4 at 4:30pm. Event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 4pm.

George Woideck says: "Persepolis is the story of a young Persian girl growing up during the Islamic revolution in Iran. It was recently released as an animated movie and was nominated for an Academy Award. The film will be shown at the Cleveland Cinemateque later that evening. I highly recommend both events, plus the book if you haven't read it. It's a powerful graphic novel of horrendous events told through a child's eyes."

A farewell to Zoe Alan Schultz

Hello all,

As some of you may know, my dear friend..., roommate.., teacher.., and sister, Zoe Alan Schultz has recently transcended this life a little over one month ago after a battle with ovarian cancer.

I cannot express enough the love and beauty I have experienced sharing this journey with her and her family. I feel lucky and grateful that I was able to live and work closely with such an amazing and beautiful woman and artist.

This weekend in Cleveland was very impactful. Especially in the way two very talented individuals took on the task of fundraising for the Schultz family through a performance at the Cleveland Public Theater.

Please enjoy this image from that performance in honor of one of the most inspiring, motivated, open, dedicated and joyful people I have ever known. Her love and spirit lives on in us all.

Frogs in the Smog: My trip to LA

Hi all, it's been a week now since I got back from visiting our friends Nicolas and Juliette in LA. After walking the canals near their Venice Beach apartment (many people don't realize there ARE canals, much like the city's namesake) Nicolas and I went to the Getty Villa where we joined up with Juliette and a French colleague, Laure, and had dinner at a great Thai place in in Malibu and then back to the Getty Villa for an evening performance in their amphitheatre. Saturday and Sunday we had a great time going up the Pacific Coast Highway in search of seal sanctuaries near Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo (about halfway to San Fran). Check out some of my better pix. Sunday night we met up with Biljana Lovrinovic—who now lives in LA—and a girlfriend at a terrific Bosnian restaurant, Aroma Cafe. I was very happy to be there to help celebrate Nicolas' new job at Imagi animation studios where he'll help bring the new Astro Boy to the screen. CONGRATS, Nicolas!

KB's 7th Annual Holiday Christmas Benefit

The 7th Annual KB and the Riptides Holiday Extravaganza Concert will be held at the Legendary Peabody's Concert Club on Friday December 21, 2008 at 8 PM, with the Belly Dancing Bombshells and Patrick Coleman on Bag-Pipes. This will be a family friendly variety type show with comics, magicians, clowns, dancers and musicians of all styles. There will be lots of special guests including past and present students that KB has taught over the years. As with Cleveland's diversity many styles of music will be showcased. Tickets can be obtained by contacting KB directly.

There will be a charity raffle and among the many prizes will be a Stratocaster guitar given away. Donations will be accepted and all proceeds from the raffle will go to Art House and the Waiting Child Fund

This Annual Holiday Concert is always huge and always an all ages event! You will need tickets to attend this event and you can get them through KB directly [contact info below].

KB has produced a Holiday Christmas show annually for 7 years now; and it always gets great reviews from all who attend. KB has never charged admission for the holiday show, but you will need a free ticket to get in. KB states, “This show is not about making money for me, it's my celebration of a childhood dream that a little boy had so long ago, who followed through with his dream of becoming a guitarist and performing on a lighted stage.”

WinterFest and Lantern Parade this Sunday 12. 2

THIS Sunday is the WinterFest on the Circle. Museums will be FREE all day. This is a good time to visit the Botanical Gardens if you haven't been. The day culminates with the very cool Lantern Parade put on by the museum (kind of a Winter Parade-the-Circle). It goes on at DUSK and lasts for only a half hour or so. Well worth checking out.

Tiny Alice featured at John Bassette memorial concert

From George Woideck: 'Cleveland singer/songwriter and independent label pioneer John Bassette passed away just one year ago after a long illness. For years John was a fixture in local music circles and was most notably identified with Hessler Road in University Circle. Lake Erie College in Painesville Ohio is presenting the first annual John Bassette Memorial Folk Festival at Morley Music Hall on the Lake Erie campus this Wednesday November 14 at 8pm. The concert, featuring performers Alex Bevan and the Tiny Alice band from the 70's is free and open to the public. Both Alex and Tiny Alice will be performing music by John Bassette as well as other original and traditional tunes. As a member of Tiny Alice and a friend of John's I'm inviting you to join us for an evening of great live music.'
