Wall Eye Gallery presents an exhibition dedicated to modern interpretations of the work of Spanish Baroque painter Diego Velazquez. Fourteen Cleveland area artists have joined together to “remix” his most famous masterpieces in their own respective styles and mediums. Art history and contemporary local talent combine in this innovative homage to one of Spain’s great masters.

2nd Annual Beachland Free Clinic fundraiser Fri. 2.12

The legendary Carlos Jones is putting on a show to benefit The Free Clinic, and you're invited to the party! Join us for an evening of live musical entertainment and art. On Friday, February 12th, the Associate Board of The Free Clinic will host the Second Annual Beachland Ballroom Free Clinic Fundraiser. This year's show is bigger than ever, featuring Carlos Jones & the P.L.U.S. Band, Austin Walkin Cane, oldboy, and nights. The event begins at 7PM and showcases five hours of reggae, rock, folk, and blues. Guests can enter raffle drawings for original local artwork donated by the neighboring Waterloo 7 Gallery, which will extend its hours to accommodate evening visitors.

All proceeds from this musical and artistic affair will benefit The Free Clinic, which provides quality medical, dental, behavioral health, and HIV services completely free of charge to the growing population of individuals lacking health care coverage.

World Music Series @ B-W 2.3 at 8PM

Baldwin-Wallace's first World Music installment kicks off with a performance by innovative violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) [picture by Julieta Cervantes]. DBR, a Haitian-American artist, is a musical omnivore who "melds his classical music roots with his own cultural references and vibrant musical imagination." Wed 2.3 at 8PM. He'll also speak on the role of black culture in his work, and the impact of hip-hop as world music. No charge.

Boldfigures at Wall Eye Gallery 1.22

Saturday LEGO Series @Science Center thru February

Kids—2nd to 5th grade—can spend their Saturdays learning the fundamentals of LEGO robotics building and programming at the Great Lakes Science Center. Every Sat from 9AM-12PM. Miles Budimir is the author of Rustbelt Romance (deepcleveland press, 2006) and Missing Albertly (Green Panda Press, 2008). His poetry has appeared in Poetry Motel, MoonLit, ArtCrimes, Muse and the Hessler Street Poetry Anthology. A philosophy lecturer and freelance writer, his writing has also appeared in the Plain Dealer, The Free Times and Northern Ohio Live magazine.

Virginia Konchan's poetry and translations have appeared or are forthcoming in The Believer, The New Republic, Notre Dame Review, Michigan Quarterly Review, Jacket, A Trunk of Delirium and elsewhere.

Claire McMahon, Ph.D, has an MFA in Writing and Poetics from Naropa University (Tthe Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics in Boulder) and a Ph.D. in 20th Century American and British Poetry from KSU. She is co-editor of MoonLit poetry journal and the author of Emergency Contact (Van Zeno Press, 2009).

Towpath Trail to connect to Wendy Park

Land has been purchased to connect Wendy Park/Whiskey Island to the Towpath Trail. The only remaining intact corridor available for a new trail in downtown Cleveland has been protected, The Trust for Public Land, ParkWorks Inc., the City of Cleveland, and Cuyahoga County announced. This purchase includes over 1.3 miles of continuous property that will serve as the backbone of the future Link to the Lake Trail.

The future trail will connect Lake Erie at Wendy Park and Whiskey Island with the historic 110-mile Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, providing access to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and New Philadelphia.

GUIDELINE & SUBMISSION CLARIFICATION: While you may pay your entry fee electronically, you must submit your entries via hard mail, along with the downloadable entry form. NO ELECTRONIC SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR THE COMPETITION.

Contest Rules: Unpublished manuscripts only. Entries are judged anonymously. Do NOT put name on manuscript pages. Attach Entry Form to your submission.

Length: Fiction and Creative Nonfiction not to exceed 3,000 words. Poetry is limited to 3 poems per entry – maximum 2 typewritten pages per poem.

KB and the Riptides 2-day Concert Event 12.19 & 12.20


KB and the Riptides have a 2-day Holiday Concert event THIS weekend. The first, a Rock-n-Bowl at Mahall's, 13200 Madison Ave. in Lakewood, is where we'll be celebrating Becky B's b-day. Join us if you can. From 9:30PM–1:30PM.

The next night they will be at Zeke's Tavern, 8188 Brecksville Road in Cleveland from 5PM–8:30PM.

Both events will support the efforts of Dancing Wheels and Guiding Eyes for the Blind, a guide dog school. Come have fun AND do some good.

FESTIVUS @ Wall Eye Gallery 12.18

University Circle becomes aglow with handmade Asian-inspired lanterns on Sunday, 12.6 as part of Winter Lights Lantern Festival @ CircleFest.
