Recent acquisitions at the Verne Gallery

Koi by Carol Jessen
In 1954 Mitzie Verne established the Verne Gallery. She passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 1st. 62 years in and the gallery continues to feature the best in Japanese-American printmaking. Located next to Valentino's in Little Italy, it's also very reasonable; I bought a print that I love there not long ago. Check out some recent acquisitions.

Carol & John's 'Free Comic Book Day' Weekend

On Saturday, May 7th, Carol & John’s hosts its annual Free Comic Book Day. Although the event takes place across the U.S., Carol & John’s hosts one of the largest events in the country. In addition to celebrating comics and comic book culture, Carol & John’s event celebrates Cleveland and its community through local art, history, cosplay and more. Again this year, the shop will give away more than 25,000 free comics (10 per person), as well as hundreds of graphic novels. The event actually begins Friday night with a midnight release party starting at 10PM  and continuing until 2AM. FCBD continues Saturday from 10AM to 7PM.
“Free Comic Book Day is a great reminder for fans that their hobby doesn't live in a vacuum,” shop owner John Dudas says. “There's lots of people to physically engage whose love of collecting shines through when you talk to them. Sharing what you enjoy with someone on the day becomes the gift you can give on FCBD. Our motto is 'Participate. Engage others. Be a friend.' —

Hilary Gent: Properties of Water 5.6 5PM

The Maria Neil Art Project announces their exclusive representation of our Drawn & Quartered 8 hostess with an opening reception of Hilary Gent : Properties of Water. Come out and support Hilary and see her new work body of work that "showcases yet again her ever-changing color palette and visual expression while focusing on a subject that is familiar to us all."

Hilary was struck that Water not only functioned as a primary force through its many formal properties (ice formations, floods, river beds, flowing streams, crushing waves, etc.) but was just as affected by how she also identified with water on an emotional level. "It is still and reflective, active and energized, wild and chaotic. Water has the ability to calm or destroy. Painting water can be compared to trying to capture the spirit of something. My hope is that if I can paint a simple glimmer of light or a distorted reflection, a quick ripple or the existence of life beneath its surface, I will have effectively translated a piece of the water’s story."

Afterward comes Olympics-style public judging. The team with the most points wins a trophy and bragging rights for the next year.

This year’s event takes place on Saturday, April 23 at HEDGE Gallery in the 78th Street Studios. In addition to 2015 trophy holders Murray Hill Life Drawing Group, competitors will represent Dr. Sketchy Cleveland, the West Side Markers, and the Northern Ohio Illustrators Society (NOIS).'
