Recovery Resouces featured in PBS documentary 4.28

The Released will air on Frontline/PBS, Tuesday, April 28th at 9pm ET. This documentary promises to be as powerful and disturbing as The New Asylums, also from Mead Street Films, where we saw seriously mentally ill men in cages receiving “therapy” and being shuttled back and forth between a maximum security prison in Ohio and the state’s hospital for the criminally insane. And we came to understand the genuine complexity of their situations and yearned for more equally complex and humane responses. The Released follows some of the same men featured in the first film who were subsequently returned “to the community” — but more often to the street — and in some cases have ended up back in prison.

Afro Fest 2009: Extra Golden / Mifune / Kokolo / Sogbety Diomande

Extra Golden was formed rather casually in May of 2004 when Ian Eagleson, Alex Minoff and Otieno Jagwasi began fiddling with each other's compositions in an apartment in the Buru Buru neighborhood of Nairobi. For rhythmic inspiration, the trio used isolated drum tracks by Onyango Wuod Omari that Eagleson had recorded earlier that year.

Formed as a composers collective in 2004, Mifune started with a mission: Create great original music that is rewarding on multiple levels for both the group and the listeners. Not to just "play" the music but extract music from the soul and send it to the mind.

April 26th is THE LAST DAY for this astonishingly beautiful exhibition in Canton, Kimono as Art: The Landscapes of Itchiku Kubota (1917–2003). Kimono are treated as brilliantly textured canvases celebrating the exquisite beauty of nature. About 25 kimono placed side by side portray the changing seasons of autumn and winter in a Symphony of Light. The San Diego Times praised it as “the best exhibit of the year”.

Arts Collinwood featured in Wall Street Journal

Last month, artists Michael Di Liberto and Sunia Boneham moved into a two-story, three-bedroom house in Cleveland's Collinwood neighborhood, where about 220 homes out of 5,000 sit vacant and boarded up. They lined their walls with Ms. Boneham's large, neon-hued canvases, turned a spare bedroom into a graphic-design studio and made the attic a rehearsal space for their band, Arte Povera.

The couple used to live in New York, but they were drawn to Cleveland by cheap rent and the creative possibilities of a city in transition. "It seemed real alive and cool," said Mr. Di Liberto. Read More

Apollo's Fire to perform 'Earth, Wind & Fire' 3.17—3.19, 3.22 & 3.24

Composers through the ages have enjoyed depicting all sorts of climatic conditions in the concert hall and opera house. Think of the famous storms Beethoven and Rossini concocted or the paeans to nature evoked by everyone from Vivaldi and Strauss to Stravinsky and Britten.

Apollo's Fire, the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, is taking to the great outdoors indoors this week for its final subscription concerts of the season. "Earth, Wind and Fire" will feature works by Rebel, Vivaldi, Rameau and Duchiffre — the last the creative nom de plume of the orchestra's principal cellist, Rene Schiffer — that paint instrumental scenes of tempests and idyllic terrain.

What: The Cleveland Baroque Orchestra performs "Earth, Wind and Fire," a program of music by Rebel, Vivaldi, Ra meau and Duchiffre, with violinist David Greenberg.

Normally a session consists of one or two models, a DJ, your host and three rounds of poses. A warm up round of one to two minute poses, a break, drinks, five and ten minute poses, a break, more drinks, and then as many long poses (15-20 minute) as they can fit in. There are also prizes and contests.

They do have a few rules:

Dry mediums only, as in ink, markers, crayons, pencils, graphite, pastels, etc. If we can clean up with a broom it is good. If you make arrangements with us ahead of time, me may be able to accommodate a very limited number/types of other mediums.
Be respectful. That means no pawing at the models and no asking them out. Hooting and hollering, however, is encouraged.
No photography at the events. Our models are posing for life drawing.
21 and up. This is a drinking event and held in a bar.
Most of all, have fun.

As rock and roll's greatest poet and one of the most important artists in any medium over the past half century, Bob Dylan wrestles with religion at the heart of his work. From iconoclast to Zionist to fundamentalist and back, explore Dylan's encounter with God, the Bible, Israel, religious identity, faith, and morality. In a discussion illustrated by selected clips of music, video, and text, scholar of popular and Jewish culture Stephen Hazan Arnoff explains how Dylan's pursuit spiritual truth embodies a modern quest of many great artists and intellectuals to make sense of ancient traditions and folkways when religious institutions and practice fail them.
