Clay is an incredibly versatile material, encompassing a rich history and a diverse rang of applications. In this class, venture beyond the usual pinching, coiling and slab-building by learning new techniques with which to manipulate clay. Beginners will develop strong fundamentals; advanced students will unlock fresh creative possibilities.

Holiday CircleFest and Lantern Festival 12.5

Inspired by centuries-old, cross-cultural traditions of ceremonial lighting displays, the Winter Lights Lantern Festival features lantern displays inside the museum and the Environment of Lights installation on Wade Oval. Holiday CircleFest is a FREE annual Circle-wide celebration presented by University Circle Inc. The museum offers activities and entertainment, including workshops for making simple lanterns for the procession. The day culminates in a procession through the Environment of Lights led by guest lantern artists and illuminated dancers and giant puppets. More Info

Little Italy kicks off the holiday season during the Holiday Art Walk, December 3,4 & 5, with wine tastings, receptions, trunk shows and great gift shopping in over 25 galleries and boutiques and dining in 21 restaurants, bakeries and bars.

The annual tree lighting at 5PM Saturday outside the Historic Mayfield Theater features a special visit from Santa Claus, 5PM to 7PM! Located in the St. Clair-Superior business and arts district, Zygote is a fine art printmaking co-op that serves the visual arts community. Come tour their facilites and workshop, visit their gallery and hear from Executive Director Liz Maugans. Also on hand for the revelry that night will be our friends, the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts. The VLA's Steven W. Day will give a brief presentation on topics that face working artists, followed by networking, food and drink.

Danielle Muad'Dib featured in Plain Dealer Arts today

CONGRATS to Danielle 'Squeal' Muad'Dib, one of our favorite models, on her feature in today's Cleveland Plain Dealer. The article quotes her extensively and says: 'Squeal, who performs Friday nights at Luxe, a restaurant and bar on Cleveland's West Side, has been at the forefront of Cleveland's burlesque revival.' Squeal is Danielles new stage name, along with Jason Tilk's 'Pinch'. We should set aside a Friday night to go see their new show.

A FREE special bi-lingual program, Tradition and Innovation in Mayan Cultural Survival. Mayan cultural practices have survived for over two millennia, in spite of environmental collapse, conquest, disease, poverty, and civil war. Using examples from Classic architecture, mythology and ethnopoetics, ritual practice, and various technologies of daily life, we examine the system of Mayan values that has supported strategies of cultural maintenance that are still observed today in Mayan communities.

Presented by Dr. Laura Martin. Dr. Martin holds a doctorate in linguistics from the University of Florida, and specializes in Mayan languages, particularly Mocho, a language spoken today by only a few Mayans in Chiapas, Mexico. Her scholarship and research centers around Central American Spanish dialectology, discourse analysis, language pedagogy, and linguistic anthropology. She is the author of several books and dozens of articles and reviews.

It's almost too perfect that those masked men of surf rock, Los Straitjackets are playing the Beachland Ballroom on this night. Dr. Sketchy’s Anti Art School, where drinking and drawing is the norm, will host their Halloween show and model Miss Annie Jones Tuesday, October 26th. With three rounds of poses; a warm up round of one and two-minute poses, some five and ten-minute poses, breaks, and as many long poses (15-20 minute) as can fit along with prizes and contests. Dry mediums only; pen and ink, markers, crayons, pencils, graphite, pastels, etc.
