Eileen Dorsey paintings at Corcoran Fine Arts 6.1

Corcoran Fine Arts & Appraisals presents Ostensible Grounds: Paintings by Eileen Dorsey with an Opening Reception this Friday, June 1st from 5–9PM. (Reception is free and open to the public.) The show runs from June 1st through Aug 31st.

Corcoran Fine Arts & Appraisals specializes in the private sale of 19th and 20th century master works but are now venturing into the contemporary arts. Ostensible Grounds will be the first of their quarterly Contemporary shows. Cleveland native Eileen Dorsey will present her newer works of "landscape" paintings.

This exhibit also takes place during Larchmere's First Friday Art Walk. This Art Walk happens the first Friday of every month and consists of over 50 privately owned shops and eateries that will feature work of local artists.

Mary Doria Russell at Visible Voice 6.1, 7–8PM

Our author friend Mary Doria Russell will have a special reading and book-signing appearance at Visible Voice Friday, June 1st from 7–8PM and 'would take it as a personal favor if any or all of [you] can come to the event.' The signing will be centered around her best selling book Doc, which HBO has just optioned for a series next fall.

She'd really 'like to have a big crowd show up for it, even if I have to buy a round of drinks for all of you at the Literary [Cafe] afterward!!!' Sounds like an offer that's hard to refuse!

Punch Brothers have a new album, Who’s Feeling Young Now? It’s the follow-up to 2010’s Grammy-nominated Antifogmatic, about which the New York Times said: “Punch Brothers have the unplugged lineup of an old-fashioned string band… But their music is as radical as … new acoustic music can be.” 

Punch Brothers was formed in 2006 by mandolinist/singer Chris Thile with four other virtuosic musicians: fiddler Gabe Witcher, banjo player Noam Pikelny, bassist Paul Kowert, and guitarist Chris “Critter” Eldridge. Their  many musical interests include indie rock, folk, jazz, bluegrass, and classical music.

Club 47 Folk Revival Doc Wins Awards, Screens 5.20

Todd Kwait's film For The Love of the Music: The Club 47 Folk Revival won Best Documentary at the Boston International Film Fest and Best Regional Doc at Southeast New England Film Music, & Arts Festival! The new documentary, celebrating the roots of the Cambridge, Massachusetts folk music scene, recently premiered before a sold-out crowd at the Boston Festival and is now pegged to be the headlining film for the Ohio Independent Film Festival, screening at The Beachland Ballroom on Sunday May 20th at 7:30 PM.

For The Love of the Music centers around Club 47, the iconic Harvard Square coffeehouse, now known as Club Passim, where Joan Baez, Tom Rush, Taj Mahal, Judy Collins and many others got their starts in the early years of the folk revival from 1958–1968.

The 105-minute film features interviews with Baez, Rush, Mahal, Collins, Maria Muldaur, Geoff Muldaur, Jim Kweskin, Jackie Washington, Jim Rooney, Peter Rowan and many others. Included are previously unreleased music and rare photographs featuring Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Eric Von Schmidt and others, and audio recordings of two unreleased Bob Dylan performances, “Talkin’ World War III Blues” and “With God on Our Side,” and a Dylan with Eric von Schmidt version of the traditional hymn “Glory, Glory”. These archival performances were recorded at the Club and are currently under preservation with the New England Folk Music Archives.

Now, these women will perform their athletic and sexy burlesque dance routines aided by The Brian Newman Quintet. Cleveland’s burlesque scene will be represented by the comedic and musical duo of Pinch and Squeal.

Ingenuity is channeling the spirits of the Kakoon Arts Club with its first annual Bal Ingenieux on Friday, May 4th. This one night only event takes the audience through an amazing journey of performance and interactivity harkening back to the wild parties of Kokoon and looking ahead to Cleveland's future. Located at the Halcyon Lodge in the heart of Ohio City, Bal Ingenieux will feature multiple venues of entertainment that will unfold as the evening progresses with three ticket levels.

2012 Arts Business Challenge: Apply Today!

The 2012 COSE Arts Business Challenge is still accepting applications. The Challenge is an online video business pitch competition with a top cash prize of $2,000! 

Established artists, business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs with an arts-business idea are eligible to apply for the competition. A total of $4,000 in prize money, as well as in-kind business support, will be awarded to the top three submissions. To enter the competition, participants must go online and submit a two page Executive Summary and a video pitch that's no more than four minutes in length. The video pitch should address the following questions:

• What does your business idea entail?
• How is your business/idea unique in the marketplace?
• Why does it make good business sense?
• How would you use the prize money to further your business/idea?

Online applications and video submissions must be received by COSE no later than May 15th at 5PM EST. One round of judging will be conducted by a panel made up of experts from the local arts and business communities. Six Finalists will be recognized, and three Top Winners will be announced at the COSE Arts Business Challenge awards ceremony on June 20th at 78th Street Studios. The COSE Arts Business Challenge is open to businesses located in N.E. Ohio (Lorain, Medina, Cuyahoga, Summit, Lake, Geauga, Portage, or Ashtabula County) and to both COSE Members and Nonmembers alike.

Murray Hill Group Landscape Show Opens 4.28
