Progressive Arts Alliance (PAA) is pleased to announce that the PAA All-Stars, an exceptional group of students from PAA's annual RHAPSODY Hip-Hop Summer Arts Camp, has been invited to perform and present at Harvard University at the end of this month.

Come support their efforts tonight, Friday, October 16, at a benefit concert for their trip. The show will feature a portion of the performances the students will present at Harvard. Also performing this evening will be Jahi, a hip-hop artist who has traveled and performed throughout the world and has recently returned to Cleveland, his hometown. The concert is at 7:30 pm. Cleveland Bridge Project this weekend

A pilot of next year's Ingenuity Fest, The Bridge Project, below the Detroit-Superior Bridge happens this weekend. Always wanted to explore it? Now's your chance. Performance, music and art.

Ingenuity will venture out of its Public Square/ PlayhouseSquare district and explore an urban space that lies central to Cleveland with spectacular views of downtown, the Cuyahoga River, the Flats, Lake Erie: the streetcar level of the Detroit Superior Bridge, immediately below and parallel to the vehicular level. Ingenuity will transform this span, about 50 feet wide in most sections, almost a mile long, with fabulous nooks, crannies, tunnels and cisterns at both the east and west ends, with art installations, exhibits and performances, many involving technology.

This experience will take place Friday September 25, opening at 4 pm, closing at midnight and continue Saturday September 26, from noon to midnight. It will be free to the public and include arts and crafts vendors, food and beverage vendors (including beer and wine), buskers and solo performers positioned across the great span of the bridge with the more complex installations and performances taking place at either end. The event will include, as at all Ingenuity events, most exhibits and performances are family friendly and each night closes with a musical event.

Three of Cleveland's most subversive visual artists have come together for a gallery exhibition of new works that are sure to turn (and scratch) heads. Warped sensationalism, savage instincts, confused meanings, self-loathing and the absurdity of modern society will all be on display. Fittingly featured at Low Life Gallery, "Getting Weird" will not only display the new works of a few of Cleveland's most exciting underground artists, but also contain a wide (price) range of art - large scale masterpieces for the discerning collector as well as affordable smaller pieces for the enthusiast.

Jake Kelly Anyone who has ever walked into The Grog Shop has seen the work of Jake Kelly, he's also created nearly 1,000 fliers for almost every independent music venue in Cleveland over the last 10 years.

Stephe D.K. "Stephe DK" is the alias of Stephen Douglas Kuchna, who received a degree in art from Cleveland State University in 2007. His current body of work mixes aspects of Pop Art and Surrealism to create a dialogue about the strange conditions of our modern age.

Ian P.E. Known in Cleveland as the Editor/Owner of Pink Eye Magazine, Ian moved back to his native Cleveland two years ago after 10 years in San Francisco (and other places). His work for this show can be summed up as "absurd explorations into American leisure activities"...the mediums on display are acrylic and latex on wood panel - loud, colorful and detailed in their figurative representations.

Doug Wood opens for Eclectica @Cain Park 7.17

The event will not involve a street closing, but it will include no cost bicycle tours, walking tours, trolley tours, local businesses, historic homes and cemeteries in a cool Cleveland neighborhood. NEXT SATURDAY July 25 Walk+Roll Detroit Shoreway / Gordon Square: Nearly three miles of streets and paths will be part of this event which showcases one of Cleveland's transformative neighborhoods. NEXT SUNDAY July 26 Walk+Roll Slavic Village / Broadway: This is the most ambitious Walk+Roll to date! Nearly eight miles of streets and paths will be used for this route which will include two Cleveland Metroparks, an inner-city golf course, a waterfall and history center, numerous new commercial and residential projects, public art projects, Cleveland Botanical Garden's community garden, bicycle polo, skateboard lessons, youth concerts and many historic churches. Washington Post Interview: 'Twitter Bird' Artist Simon Oxley

Japan-based illustrator Simon Oxley is not a cartoonist, but rather a brilliant artist with a truly comic sense of humor. He has created thousands of whimsical illustrations, yet most of the world over, there is a particular one that is iconic to millions. (And for which, we must note, he was paid a grand sum of less than seven bucks.) The image? The Twitter bird.

Oxley, who grew up in England, has created countless bright, engaging images for the stock-library company iStockPhoto, using Adobe Illustrator and "vector-based" images. Fund the Arts in Ohio WITHOUT SPENDING A DIME

As the State of Ohio considers its new budget, it is up to you to communicate the importance of the arts to your representatives in the State House. With the proposed reductions to the Ohio Arts Council, all arts organizations will see drastic reductions to these dollars (possibly up to 50% or more) which increases the responsibility of securing replacement funds on the shoulders of the Trustees and Staff of the individual organizations.

Take the time to go to the Ohio Citizens for the Arts website and use their easy to use format and talking points to email or send a print letter to your representative.

Once you get to their website do the following; Type in your zipcode. Scroll down to the “Take Action” link entitled Ohio Citizens Must Act Now to Support the Arts The rest of the process is very user friendly and takes LESS THAN 2 MINUTES to complete.

Parade The Circle This Saturday

The 20th Annual Parade the Circle Celebration will take place this Saturday, June 13th.

Bring the family to University Circle to enjoy a free celebration of the creative spirit. Festivities begin at 11AM, parade at noon and entertainment, food and activities for the whole family in Circle Village until 4PM.

THIS FREE COMMUNITY ARTS PARADE is presented annually by the Cleveland Museum of Art. International and national guest artists join Greater Cleveland artists, families, schools and community groups in a spectacular display of bright costumes, giant puppets, stilt-dancers, handmade masks and colorful floats.

Art Event: Drawn and Quartered Sat. 6.6 @7PM

Figure drawing as a spectator sport? It's never been tried but on Saturday, June 6th, 2009 at the Asterisk Gallery in Tremont, four established figure and drawing groups will meet up and draw against time and each other for the amusement of an engaged audience. Costumed models and dancers will be drawn live by competitive artists vying for praise and prizes. The disciplines will range from quick gestures to a 90-minute portrait (run concurrently.)

Groups planning on participating include Dr. Sketchy, The Murray Hill Group, Tremont’s Pretentious Artists of the Literary Cafe and N.O.I.S.
(The Northern Ohio Illustrators Society.)

The public is invited to witness this first-ever event and will be encouraged to comment and/or join in. Finished artwork will be available for purchase during and after the event.

Refreshments, music, and drawing materials for the inspired will be provided.

Murray Hill Art Walk this weekend

The three-day Little Italy June Art Walk today through Sunday is getting a value-added Little Italy Street Festival from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The festival will be complete with jugglers, music and face painting. Sample some of the good wines available in the neighborhood on Mayfield Road.

More than 30 galleries, studios & boutiques present handmade works by regional, national, and internationally known artists.
