Slavic Soul Party! Announces Cleveland Show 5.3

The Brooklyn, NY-based brass band Slavic Soul Party! (SSP!) has just announced a special one-night-only appearance in Cleveland. The concert and dance party takes place Saturday May 3rd, 2008 at the St. Sava Cathedral Hall located at 6306 Broadview Road in Parma, Ohio. Doors open at 7:30, show starts at 8 PM. Admission is only $10 [free admission 16 and under].

The New York Times describes them as “Fiery Gypsy brass, soulful Balkan anthems, and hip-grinding American funk: Slavic Soul Party! is just what it says.” Fiery Balkan brass, throbbing funk grooves, killer Gypsy accordion, and virtuoso jazz chops make Slavic Soul Party! New York City's official #1 brass band for Balkan Soul Gypsy Funk. With Mexican, Asian, Jewish, Gypsy, and American roots, SSP! makes new music out of the unplanned results of immigration, proximity, and globalization, pumping a strong Balkan brass sound through the filter of life in New York's outer boroughs.

The band has set audiences on their feet all across the U.S., Europe, and beyond. They have performed at Babylon (Istanbul, Turkey) with the Karandila Orkestar, at Irving Plaza (New York City) with Gogol Bordello, on the Warped Tour (US), and in virtually every major New York club. No strangers to Cleveland, SSP! have performed at a number of venues across the city including being featured at the 2006 World Music Festival.

A Stroke of Insight: an amazing story about the brain & consciousness

When you have time, well worth the 18 or so minutes. You should have a high-speed connection, however. Of course, what I got out of it is that everyone should become a writer, artist or musician!

Neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor had an opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: One morning, she realized she was having a massive stroke. As it happened -- as she felt her brain functions slip away one by one, speech, movement, understanding -- she studied and remembered every moment. This is a powerful story about how our brains define us and connect us to the world and to one another. www.ted.com/talks/view/id/229
