Butane Variations @Wilberts 10.5

Butane Variations. Brooklyn alt-country six-piece. Soul ballads, road-weary escape anthems, garage stompers, and more. Mixed and mastered by Bryce Goggin [Pavement, Clem Snide] and Alan Douches [Sufjan Stevens, Animal Collective]. RIYL: Wilco, The Band, the melodic side of Pavement early '70s era Neil Young, sung in a voice like Paul Simon.

This from Chris, cousin of Elizabeth Kenney:

Since I graduated with my Master's Degree I've been sure to go the true artist's route and choose to do something that will inevitably NEVER make me any money, play in a band. I'm sure my father is very proud...

Anyway, I'll get my act together some day, and better the world, but in the meantime, I've been geeking out in a basement on the Lower East Side of Manhattan with some of my closest musical friends, in a band called Butane Variations. What has come of it are 2 records, both of which we think are pretty cool. Our full-length record, self titled "Butane Variations", hit stores today, and since our PR company sucks, (or we just couldn't pay them enough) we have had to take up the slack and do some shameless self-promotion. Anyway, if you want to check it out, I have included the link for our record company, where you can buy the CD in hard copy. I also am including 2 tracks for you to check out, and if you are "New School" you can buy the record on itunes. Let me know what you think...

Balkan Beat Box coming back to Cleveland! 10.01 9pm

10/01 - Balkan Beat Box 9pm $12 Balkan Beat Box is steeped with an intense lifetime of research into their own non-Western roots as well as other cultures. A quasi-circus event, BBB performs with a core of 6 musicians, collaborating with artists from Bulgaria, Morocco, Spain, Israel, and Turkey who draw on a variety of styles from around the world. Every event keeps the audience guessing what the next surprise will be. BBB makes connections that politics often keep separate. Jewish, Gypsy, Arabic, and American are united by hip hop beats and dancehall toasts. BBB’s musical hitch-hiking continues as they mix things up with dub and electronics, juxtaposed with ancient Moroccan and Mediterranean melodies. The band’s uncategorizable sound gives equal weight to soulful acoustic timbres and digital rhythms creating a uniquely organic sound with electronic elements.

Here is the link to buy tix: http://www.grogshop.gs/tickets.html

Her larger, sculptural work will be on exhibit. SAFMOD Performance Ensemble creates a fusion of movement, enchanting audiences of all ages. Call for Artists: COSE and Guitar Mania 3.8.07

This from Abby Maier:

Hello everyone:

I am hoping you can assist us with an artistic challenge. COSE is a sponsor of the Guitar Mania project and we need your help and ideas.

We are looking for a unique guitar design that reflects the importance of small business to the local economy, and/or how business is key to the growth of this community. We are focused not only on Cleveland, but on the 8 county area of northeast Ohio, and would like a design that somehow celebrates the importance of business to our region. We would be thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase the talents of a local artist who can help us express this concept.

After the public display period, the guitar will be displayed in the lobby of the new COSE offices in the renovated Higbee’s
Building in Public Square. There is only a short window for submissions- designs are due by next Thursday, March 8th, and the artist will then have a month to complete the guitar. Designs will still be submitted to the Guitar Mania jury for final approval. Artists will be paid an honorarium. Please download the attached form [email Juan for PDF] to apply (ignore the past deadline) and submit your design electronically to amaier@gcpartnership.com

or mail to:

Abby Maier
COSE/GCP
50 Public Square, Suite 200
Cleveland, OH 44113

Please email me with any questions or clarification on the theme.
Thank you!
Abby
