Doug Wood Trio at Brothers Lounge 1.31 8PM

Guitarist Doug Wood and bassist Darren Frate have a long history together going back to the late ’80s when they formed jazzy folk-rock instrumental group Watts Gnu. Wood has made a reputation for himself as an acoustic guitarist who’s frequently on the road, playing instrumental music that crosses a lot of genre boundaries. Frate has performed as a sideman for a long list of oldie and classic rock groups and performs with jazz ensemble Velvet Voyage at Brothers Lounge on Mondays.

Wood and Frate have continued their collaboration, along with classically trained cellist Tara Hanishalso a member of one of the area’s
hottest new bands; Seafair, the Akron Symphony, and the chamber ensemble Azalea String Quartet.

The three of them, as the Doug Wood Trio, have released Cellocentric, a ten-track instrumental album that gives each of the talented players room to shine while deftly blending their instruments into a well-balanced ensemble; mixing the styles of classical, rock, folk, pop, and new age. Along with originals, they put their own spin on the Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood,” re-interpret George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” as “While My Cello Gently Weeps,” and even the Spider-Man theme.
They’ll be celebrating the new CD by giving the tunes a live airing at Brothers LoungeFri 1/31 @ 8PM

Consider Helping The Progressive Arts Alliance

Progressive Arts Alliance's work in Northeast Ohio allows young people to ignite their passion, open their minds, and inspire them to create. Through integrating the arts into the core curriculum of local schools, PAA has enabled students to build and refine valuable skills in critical thinking, creative problem solving, leadership, collaboration, and communication. These skills will propel their students into a successful future in college and beyond.

In 2013, PAA has provided over 90,000 minutes of instruction to approximately 2,500 students in our community. 53% of this instruction occurred in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) classrooms. To see this work in action and learn more about PAA's impact, watch this short PAA video feature.

It costs approximately $150 per student to bring our dynamic arts programming into schools through their year-long residency partnerships. Click here to donate safely and securely online.
