78th St. Studios Third Friday Art Walk 2.19 5–9PM

Gallery +, HEDGE Gallery and the Eileen Dorsey Studios are highlights of the next Third Friday event at 78th Street Studios.

Gallery+ is pleased to present the Pop/Expressionist art explorations of Hard-Line Fe-Line by Cleveland native Laura Dumm.

Opening this Friday, HEDGE Gallery presents Threaded, featuring recent textile-based work by Libby Chaney, Rebecca Cross and Jessica Pinsky. HEDGE's walls will be filled with prints, large-scale weavings and collages, showcasing the relationship between the artists and their fabric mediums.

Eileen Dorsey has produced a new series of dynamic landscape paintings inspired by a 10-day visit to Ireland last May with her sister and mother. Welcome Home showcases Dorsey's mastery of impasto landscape painting.

78th Street Studios is the largest art and design complex in Northeast Ohio, filled with over 40 retail galleries, artist studios, design showrooms, and other creative spaces under one roof. Every third Friday the 78th Street Studio tenants open their doors to the public for a free art walk from 5–9PM.

MIX: Mask @CMA 2.5, 5—9PM

Celebrate Mardi Gras and Carnival at MIX: Mask! Check out masks from around the world in the galleries with performances by students from the Cleveland Humanities Collaborative, go hands-on with a mask-themed Art Cart, and unleash your creative side when you make your own Mardi Gras-style mask. Plus, check out the special exhibitions "Silent Poetry: Masterworks of Chinese Painting" and "Imagining the Garden."

MUSIC: DJ Dongo 5:00–9:00 p.m., atrium. New Orleans jazz to Brazilian carnival rhythms.

TOURS: We Wear the Mask 6:15 & 7:45PM. Inspired by works of art from the CMA collections, students (Aaron Perine, Amber Love, and Gabrielle Sudik) share their reflections on the masks we wear in our lives. Join the tour to hear their poems, stories, and presentations. Presented in collaboration with the Cleveland Humanities Collaborative's Voices from the Village. Tours meet at the top of the east escalator.

ART ACTIVITIES: Make It! Masks! 5–9PM., atrium. The tradition of Mardi Gras masks began when revelers sought ways to hide their identities, so people from all walks of life could celebrate together. Join the festivities by making your own Mardi Gras-inspired mask.

ART CART: Masks: Around the World 5–7PM, atrium. Experience hands-on art with the Art Cart, with the chance to handle real works of art from
the education art collection. Check out African, Japanese, and Native American masks.

Advance tickets $8; $10 day of event. CMA members FREE. Reservations recommended. Cash bar. Food available for purchase in the museum’s restaurant and cafĂ©.

Brews + Prose at Market Garden Brewery 2.2, 7PM

Celebrate Groundhog Day with Brews + Prose Tuesday, February 2, at 7PM, when they welcome Mark Winegardner and Michael Garriga. More about the authors below. As always, if you plan to dine there, they suggest that you make a reservation or arrive early.

A native of the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, Michael Garriga comes from a long line of notable Creole outlaws and storytellers. His work has been published in The Southern Review, Esquire, Oxford American, and numerous other journals. His collection of flash fiction, The Book of Duels, was published by Milkweed Editions in 2014. He's co-editor of the online journal, FictionSoutheast.org.

Mark Winegardner’s books include the novels The Veracruz Blues, Crooked River Burning, The Godfather Returns, and The Godfather’s Revenge, the story collection That’s True of Everybody and the textbook 3x33. He is now working on a novel called Red-Blooded American Smut. A Senior Writer for The Oxford American and a frequent contributor to ESPN The Magazine, Winegardner’s work has also appeared in Details, Five Points, GQ, The New York Times Magazine, Playboy, Ploughshares, and many others. Winegardner has taught at George Washington University and John Carroll University and is currently the Burroway Chair of English & Distinguished Research Professor at Florida State University.
