International Film Fest website, etc.

The 34th Cleveland International Film Festival’s website is now live. Be sure to visit the film description pages at www.clevelandfilm.org to make your choices for this year’s CIFF, March 18 —28, 2010 at Tower City Cinemas. If people let me know what they're interested in, we can plan one of our infamous group outings.

Program Guides will be available throughout the region, including all Dollar Bank locations, the week of March 1st.

It’s not too late to apply [or nominate someone] for the 2010 COSE Arts Business and Innovation Awards. Visit www.cosearts.org to apply in one of the following four Art and Business Awards Categories:

The Individual Artist: an artist, or arts-based business of one, that has achieved career success using sound business practices and planning.

The Arts Business: an arts-based small business of two or more employees that has achieved career success using sound business practices and planning. Both for profit and nonprofit companies are eligible.

The Young Arts Entrepreneur: a creative professional (recent arts program graduate or early stage entrepreneur) that has taken steps toward establishing an arts business by creating an executive summary highlighting their mission statement, goals and objectives.

The Arts and Culture Community Champion: a small business (non arts-based) that has invested time and resources into creative partnerships with the arts for the benefit of both the art entities and their own company.

Both nominations and self applications for these Cleveland artist awards are encouraged. All applications are due by 5PM March 2.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo @ Oberlin 2.23


South African singing group Ladysmith Black Mambazo will grace Oberlin College's Finney Chapel with its a cappella harmonies and raw energy. Members of the group are outspoken advocates of civil rights in South Africa and were even invited by Nelson Mandela to accompany him to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

Make plans now to meet us at Lake Erie Artists Gallery for an evening of networking and fantastic fare from Sarava, one of Cleveland's hottest restaurants serving creative Brazilian cuisine. Recently, Lake Erie Artist Gallery, owner Paula Atwell relocated from Downtown Cleveland to a storefront gallery in the heart of Shaker Square.

Joining us will be members of the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA), a program of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association. Their mission is to facilitate access to legal services...for Northeast Ohio artists and arts organizations. Come meet lawyers from the VLA and hear a short presentation from one of their members about how artists and musicians can best negotiate a lease when renting studio or gallery space.

2nd Annual Beachland Free Clinic fundraiser Fri. 2.12

The legendary Carlos Jones is putting on a show to benefit The Free Clinic, and you're invited to the party! Join us for an evening of live musical entertainment and art. On Friday, February 12th, the Associate Board of The Free Clinic will host the Second Annual Beachland Ballroom Free Clinic Fundraiser. This year's show is bigger than ever, featuring Carlos Jones & the P.L.U.S. Band, Austin Walkin Cane, oldboy, and nights. The event begins at 7PM and showcases five hours of reggae, rock, folk, and blues. Guests can enter raffle drawings for original local artwork donated by the neighboring Waterloo 7 Gallery, which will extend its hours to accommodate evening visitors.

All proceeds from this musical and artistic affair will benefit The Free Clinic, which provides quality medical, dental, behavioral health, and HIV services completely free of charge to the growing population of individuals lacking health care coverage.

Pink Eye Magazine is now printing limited edition art books. The Pink Eye Book of Collage will focus on collage art from Cleveland area artists (past and present.) There will be an opening party at Wall Eye Gallery on Friday April 30th 2010. All of the art included in the book will be on display and for sale. All skill levels welcome— send your collages, the best will be selected for print, BUT others may be part of the gallery exhibition.

World Music Series @ B-W 2.3 at 8PM

Baldwin-Wallace's first World Music installment kicks off with a performance by innovative violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) [picture by Julieta Cervantes]. DBR, a Haitian-American artist, is a musical omnivore who "melds his classical music roots with his own cultural references and vibrant musical imagination." Wed 2.3 at 8PM. He'll also speak on the role of black culture in his work, and the impact of hip-hop as world music. No charge.

Art of William Sommer at the Beck Center
