GENGHIS CON 2016 11.27, 2–7PM

GENGHIS CON 2016 is THIS Sunday, November 27th from 2–7PM at The Lake Erie Building (13000 Athens, Lakewood, Ohio 44107), admission is FREE and open to the public. The regionally focused convention is celebrating its eighth year in a row bringing together the prolific community of cartoonists, comics makers, illustrators, printmakers, authors and zinesters that call the Rust Belt (and Beyond) home. From Detroit to Pittsburgh to Columbus, Cleveland is uniquely situated at the center of a cultural DIY Punk Triangle and the perfect place to hold such an event.

What started small, as a haphazard, informal gathering of less than 40 exhibitors in 2009 on the floorspace at The Beachland Ballroom has grown to one of the most anticipated events of the year in the hangar-like event space of The Lake Erie Building with attendance nearly doubling each year since the move in 2014. Genghis Con was recognized in Cleveland Magazine’s “Best of Cleveland” issue in 2015 as Best Comic Book Convention. It truly is the convergence and celebration of the best of regional small press, independent comics and zines. This year’s show promises to be another stellar year!

Genghis Con is the best opportunity for fans of small press and independent comics, artwork, zines and literature to find those hidden gems being cultivated right here in the region. Attendees can expect to see, and visit with, long-standing Genghis Con regulars like Derf, Gary and Laura Dumm, John G and Jake Kelly, as well as Genghis Con first timers like Noah Van Sciver, whose work has been published by Fantagraphics as well as Ivan Brandon, most recently the writer of Image Comics’ Drifter.

The night before Genghis Con, the traditional Kick-Off Party at Mahall’s 20 Lanes at 13200 Madison in Lakewood. There will be art supplies provided by BLICK Art Supplies for a Drink-N-Draw in the bar, while live panel discussions with a variety of Genghis Con exhibitors happens in the show room. A performance by a gleam of music from the new comic REACH, debuting at Genghis Con will cap off the night.

The show is free, family friendly, and open to the public. Barrio taco truck will be back again this year for delicious snacks. The Lake Erie Building is at the corner of Athens and Halstead in Lakewood, just south of Madison Park.

Tuesday, November 15, at 7PM, Brews + Prose welcomes Rebecca Scherm, whose first novel, The Unbecoming, was praised as "startlingly inventive" in the pages of The New York Times; and Anne Trubek, whose new book, The History and Uncertain Future of Handwriting, is the most exciting and controversial take on the subject of cursive ever written.

As always, those of you who would like to eat before the event should make reservations or arrive early--we'll be setting up shop in the Ohio City Room at Market Garden Brewery. Keep in mind that Amit's books will be for sale at the event courtesy of Mac's Backs. Meanwhile, we continue to offer what we think is the best literary deal in town: buy a book and get a free beer.

Nick Cave: One More Time With Feeling 3D 12.1

One More Time With Feeling 3D, starring Nick Cave, starts 12/1 at The Cedar Lee Theatre.

Originally a performance based concept, One More Time With Feeling evolved into something much more significant as director Andrew Dominik delved into the tragic backdrop of the writing and recording of the album. Interwoven throughout the Bad Seeds’ filmed performance of the new album are interviews and footage shot by Dominik, accompanied by Cave’s intermittent narration and improvised rumination. Filmed in black-and-white and color, in 3D, the result is stark, fragile and raw.
