'Transition' at HEDGE Gallery 4.18, 5–9PM

HEDGE Gallery presents “TRANSITION”, Jason Alexander Byers' recent art projects featuring tar and paper series and target themed collages. Building on his fascination with cityscapes and skylines, he traces the positive and negative space of New York City’s churches using tar, watercolors, and india ink, reminiscent of a 'pop culture' Rorschach inkblot. While not strictly iconoclastic, his most recent projects "call to question an obsessive fascination with buildings and the ideas inside them."

Friday at 5–9PM

Station Hope: a FREE, One-night Event, Sat. 4.26

Presented by Cleveland Public Theatre, Ohio City Incorporated and Ward 3 Councilman Joe Cimperman, Station Hope is a multi-arts event that celebrates the triumphs of the Underground Railroad, the history of St. John's Church and the contemporary struggles for freedom and justice.

Much like Cleveland Public Theatre's Pandemonium, Arts In August, and Party in the Gordon Square, Station Hope offers audiences a rich and fun experience created by artists throughout Northeast Ohio. CPT will stage this event on one of the most historically significant sites in Greater Cleveland—St. John's Church or Station Hope as it was known on the Underground Railroad. You will tour St. John's sanctuary, parish hall, and intricate basements to view an array of short performances of dance, theatre, storytelling and music. Visual art displays and public arts activities permeate the event and choral performance set the atmosphere of the outdoor spaces in and around the church.

Station Hope is a FREE, one-night-only event, Saturday April 26, 2014, 6–10PM.

St. John's Episcopal Church is located at 2600 Church Street in the Ohio City neighborhood of Cleveland. St. John's is the oldest consecrated building in Cuyahoga County. As a church active in the Underground Railroad, St. John's was a last stop for fleeing slaves seeking their freedom across the waters of Lake Erie and the church's steeple acted as a beacon of freedom.

Doug Wood Trio at Brothers Lounge 1.31 8PM

Guitarist Doug Wood and bassist Darren Frate have a long history together going back to the late ’80s when they formed jazzy folk-rock instrumental group Watts Gnu. Wood has made a reputation for himself as an acoustic guitarist who’s frequently on the road, playing instrumental music that crosses a lot of genre boundaries. Frate has performed as a sideman for a long list of oldie and classic rock groups and performs with jazz ensemble Velvet Voyage at Brothers Lounge on Mondays.

Wood and Frate have continued their collaboration, along with classically trained cellist Tara Hanish, also a member of one of the area’s
hottest new bands; Seafair, the Akron Symphony, and the chamber ensemble Azalea String Quartet.

The three of them, as the Doug Wood Trio, have released Cellocentric, a ten-track instrumental album that gives each of the talented players room to shine while deftly blending their instruments into a well-balanced ensemble; mixing the styles of classical, rock, folk, pop, and new age. Along with originals, they put their own spin on the Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood,” re-interpret George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” as “While My Cello Gently Weeps,” and even the Spider-Man theme.
They’ll be celebrating the new CD by giving the tunes a live airing at Brothers Lounge. Fri 1/31 @ 8PM

Consider Helping The Progressive Arts Alliance

Progressive Arts Alliance's work in Northeast Ohio allows young people to ignite their passion, open their minds, and inspire them to create. Through integrating the arts into the core curriculum of local schools, PAA has enabled students to build and refine valuable skills in critical thinking, creative problem solving, leadership, collaboration, and communication. These skills will propel their students into a successful future in college and beyond.

In 2013, PAA has provided over 90,000 minutes of instruction to approximately 2,500 students in our community. 53% of this instruction occurred in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) classrooms. To see this work in action and learn more about PAA's impact, watch this short PAA video feature.

It costs approximately $150 per student to bring our dynamic arts programming into schools through their year-long residency partnerships. Click here to donate safely and securely online.
