For The Love of the Music centers around Club 47, the iconic Harvard Square coffeehouse, now known as Club Passim, where Joan Baez, Tom Rush, Taj Mahal, Judy Collins and many others got their starts in the early years of the folk revival from 1958–1968.

Included are previously unreleased music and rare photographs featuring Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Eric Von Schmidt and others, and audio recordings of two unreleased Bob Dylan performances, “Talkin’ World War III Blues” and “With God on Our Side,” and a Dylan with Eric von Schmidt version of the traditional hymn “Glory, Glory”. SPACES Benefit: Monster Drawing Rally 4.5

A benefit for SPACES, the Monster Drawing Rally allows spectators to observe artists in the act of creation. Providing the basic necessities of the drawing practice—pencils, charcoal, pens, markers, ink, and paper—SPACES creates the context while the artists create the content of the drawings. The evening will consist of three one-hour drawing shifts (6-7, 7-8, 8-9PM) that each feature approximately 30 artists drawing simultaneously. As the drawings are completed, they will be hung on the walls and made available for purchase for $65 each. The Monster Drawing Rally provides a unique opportunity to watch a drawing come to life, and to purchase a work of art minutes after its completion. Proceeds from the event provide direct support for SPACES' exhibitions and residency programs.

SPACES will also feature the Li'l Monster Drawing Rally, a section where children and families may sit, draw and display their work on the wall for the evening or the weekend. Children age 17 and under are admitted to the Monster Drawing Rally for FREE! Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Dave Alvin @ The Beachland Ballroom 3.7

I'm heartbroken that I will not be in town Wednesday March 7th when Dave Alvin & The Guilty Ones visit the Beachland Ballroom (8PM, $20.) Guitarist and singer-songwriter Dave Alvin made his name in the early ‘80s as a member of Los Angeles band the Blasters. The Blasters stood out due to their love of the kind of rock n’ roll heard on AM radios and jukeboxes of '50s Americana. After four albums, the Blasters split up, with Dave Alvin loaning his guitar skills to bands like X and The Gun Club, groups who put their own muddy and sometimes bloody fingerprints on the traditions of country, soul, and rockabilly. Alvin’s had a long, storied and influential music career as he's turned his music skills to storytelling, writing songs in the California storytelling tradition.

“He’s old and battered and records unfashionable blues and hillbilly songs for a small label, but Dave Alvin is as good a lyricist as any these days. That’s evident on his new album, ‘Eleven Eleven,’ where his sharp-eyed stories of the past are steeled by a hard-rocking rhythm section and his electric guitar.”—Washington Post.

BayArts' Small Good Things 2.10—3.3

I've seen Erin Schechtman's work and it's amazing. Well worth the trek out to the beautiful Huntington park location!

Ceramicist Sue Kirchgessner and painter Erin Schechtman spent a year developing artwork that reminds them of summer. Erin created realistic figurative paintings in oil paint and encaustic (beeswax) and floral mixed media pieces that have glowing, gilded accents. Sue made functional ceramic lanterns and beautiful tableware covered in elaborate nature vignettes. The resulting body of work is both playful and powerful.

Opening: Friday, Feb. 10th 2012

Waiting Child Fund FUNraiser 3.10

'We’re raisin’ some loot for the Waiting Child Fund. Saddle up and test yer luck at the tables of the High Noon Saloon. Chow on some top-notch grub, wet yer’ whistle, and take home a bounty of prizes. It’ll cost ya $75, but you’ll be a happy camper knowin’ you’re helpin’ to find lifelong connections for youth in foster care.'

They are currently securing top-notch auction items such as a one-week vacation at Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas, a kitchen remodel, and much more!

CoolCleveland features Pretentious Tremont Artists

Nice CoolCleveland piece on Tim Herron and the Pretentious Tremont Artists. They're part of our Drawn 'n' Quartered event in May and many of us draw there on a regular basis. Always a great way to end the week!
